Savannah Jerk, Soho

Carribean restaurant, Food 3/5, Price £10 to £15, Atmosphere 4/5 Waiting time 10mins website

Located in the heart of Soho, Savannah Jerk don’t cook on charcoal fires so their Jerk dishes lack the smoky, barbequed aroma. Nevertheless, the meat is marinated and spiced well so they’re hot and tasty in their own right. Instead of the usual accompaniment of gravy, they come tangy sweet and sour sauce, which can be a bit overbearing. The generous portion of rice and peas has a distinct coconut flavour. The chicken roti was a mild, slow cooked curry wrapped in a big soft pancake.

The restaurant was buzzing on a wet Wednesday evening . The clientele of well-dressed expats and young Soho professionals were sociably enjoying the piles of comfort food in the brightly coloured dining room. The macaroni and cheese is listed as a side-dish but is huge. The savvy ladies on the table next to us had opted to have it as a main for a bargain dinner at just £3.95.
